Richard Phené Spiers was born in Oxford on 19 May 1838. An architect and gifted teacher, Spiers trained in Paris and London, winning the RA Schools Gold Medal and Travelling Scholarship before being appointed head of the Academy’s newly formed Architectural School in 1870. He travelled throughout Europe and the Middle East, often with a group of artist friends, and his architectural watercolours became well-known at the Academy’s Summer Exhibition. This drawing was presented to the Academy by W. L. Spiers in 1916.
