Artwork description

In this enigmatic, circular limited edition ‘sign’, Humphrey Ocean RA’s maze-like road has no beginning or end. Ocean’s admiration of the iconic work of Margaret Calvert (the designer responsible for many of the road signs seen across the UK) is interpreted here as part of his ongoing exploration into what constitutes ‘the ordinary’. Familiar subject matter for Ocean includes armchairs, skips and household radios as well as portraits. Far from mundane, each object holds something for the artist beyond their physical appearance; "The things that I paint make their mark, make me feel something, and it is that feeling I’m trying to paint".

Artist Sales: this work is sold by the artist. The sale is facilitated by RA Enterprises (RAE) for which RAE receives a commission from the artist only.
