Product story

The sculptures of Conrad Shawcross explore subjects that lie on the borders of geometry and philosophy, physics and metaphysics. For the 2015 Summer Exhibition’s Annenberg Courtyard installation – The Dappled Light of the Sun – Shawcross created a large-scale, immersive work consisting of five weathered steel, cloud-like forms made from thousands of tetrahedrons that divide and cascade down in scale from the centre out. Shawcross’ choice of the tetrahedron is rooted in his practice of modelling scientific thought and reason into his artwork. The tetrahedron was regarded by the ancient Greek philosophers as the symbol of the atom – the unobtainable but essential unit of all matter that could not be further subdivided.

Care instructions:
Store in a cool dry place. The work must be wrapped in a breathable material. The particular steel that the work is made from is designed to weather, it will continue to change appearance as it reacts to the composition of the surrounding air. This process does not affect its structural integrity and is an intentional outcome of the particular choice of material.

The RA Editions programme generates valuable revenue for the RA and in particular the RA Schools.

The sculptures of Conrad Shawcross RA explore subjects that lie on the borders of geometry and philosophy, physics and metaphysics. Often inspired by redundant theories and technologies as well as natural forces, his structures remain enigmatic, filled with paradox and wonder. Shawcross has also experimented with ideal geometries and topologies; these constructions are conceived as systems, sometimes modular, sometimes mechanical, which could theoretically be extended infinitely. He often pays tribute to great pioneers and analysts, and considers specific moments or figures from the past. “The Greeks considered the tetrahedron to represent the very essence of matter.”
