Artwork description

Joan of Arc, the iconic medieval French heroine and Roman Catholic saint who met her death at the stake, is the vibrant double presence in this enigmatic linocut screenprint by Stephen Chambers RA.

The subject’s glinting, golden eyes are achieved through the collage technique of Chine-collé, by which delicate paper is applied to the work’s surface.

Printmaking has always been central to Chambers’ artistic output. In a previous series of etchings, When Trouble Meets Trouble, he created imagined liaisons between characters who, residing in the pages of fiction or living in differing eras, could never have actually met.

All proceeds from the sale of RA Editions prints go directly to support the RA Schools.
