Artwork description

For the three new etchings made by David Mach at Norman Ackroyd’s studio, the artist elaborated on the doodles he makes while talking on the telephone or during long meetings.

A further development within Mach’s multidisciplinary practice, these works have a sense of frenzy about them. Although abstract, they suggest industrial machine parts mid-explosion, or in the artist’s own words ‘a gaggle of objects’. Mach’s ever-developing practice, which is essentially inspired by imagery from vintage comic books, encompasses sculpture, collage, printmaking, music and poetry. He sees these new prints as a process of ‘deciphering codes . . . of trying to figure out where I’m going and what I’m doing.’

About David Mach RA

David Mach RA attended the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee from 1974 to 1979. Here, Mach decided to specialise in sculpture because he thought it was the most intellectually challenging and physically demanding practice.
