Product story

What comes as a contrast here to the first volume is a quiet comedy, while the eeriness swirls in the background. This volume is as much Ealing Studios as James Ensor. Parts of Ishmael’s story evoke John Buchan and Erskine Childers and Anthony Hope, all swashbuckle and smarmy charm. Even in the most extreme moments Catling has an eye to the wry, to the momentous absurdity of just being a thing made of flesh in a world that is not.
Stuart Kelly, The Guardian.
