Artwork description

This print was inspired by the life story of the Romanian-born Hungarian composer of contemporary classical music, György Ligeti. In December 1956, two months after the Hungarian Revolution was violently suppressed by the Soviet Army, Ligeti fled from communist Hungary to Austria with his (then ex-) wife.

Woodall uses stark contrast between extreme light and dark to highlight the plight of a lone individual obliged to leave their home in the hope of finding a better life.

The plate for this print was etched and printed by Woodall in his studio at Yorkshire ArtSpace, Sheffield.
