The Rock Pool 2026 by Caragh Thuring

Thuring builds and arranges layered imagery in her work. Subverting traditional visual and conventional hierarchies, she integrates landscapes, people, and places. For her new print The Rock Pool, she has incorporated specific iconographic elements found within multiple works across Painting the French Riviera including the bather, windows, and foregrounded foliage, as well as the distinct tones of the landscape.

Thuring has truly approached the print as a painter and has pushed etching to its limits, revealing the complexity and depth of consideration that goes into modern printing techniques. The print stands as a testament to what can be achieved through experimentation and involves five different methods of etching, the process of using acid to cut designs into metal to be printed, each providing their own unique results.

Produced in the RA Schools print workshop as an edition of 20, each print is signed, dated and numbered by the artist.

Product story

The Rock Pool, 2026
Colour etching with aquatint, sugarlift, spitbite, chine collé and photopolymer
55 x 69.5 cm

"Noticing works from the exhibition that featured windows, I was immediately taken to a series of window paintings I had made previously. One of these became the basis of the print, whilst also thinking about Matisse cut outs and early 20th century posters advertising the Riviera. I didn't realise that I could make an etching that had so much colour with a tonal and textural result that belies the expectation of what particular print technique one is looking at. It was exciting to achieve this, working with Rudy Taylor at the RA Schools print studio."

Caragh Thuring works with painting, drawing, weaving and photography. She studied BA Hons in Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University 1991-1995. Thuring paints the overlooked and the out of sight, curious to what lies beneath the surface. Filtering landscape, people, places, boundaries and territories, she interweaves the technological and human.

Thuring was elected a Royal Academician in 2024. She lives and works between London and Argyll, Scotland.
