Product story

Jason Hicklin’s dramatic etchings are inspired by the many walks he undertakes in the British Isles. He begins each of his works outside in the landscape, where he walks, takes notes and draws in his sketchbooks. After which, he returns to the studio for, as he says, ‘a period of contemplation, analysis and re-engagement with the sketchbooks and the landscape itself – a trigger for the memory of place and experience.’

The decisive mark-making used by Hicklin reflects a direct approach to printmaking that delivers etchings rich in light, shadow and contrast. He often works (as does Norman Ackroyd who taught him) straight on to soft zinc plates while he is out in the landscape. The alchemy of the etching process is of fundamental importance to his work: as in these prints, Hicklin positively chooses to embrace the element of chance which is introduced during the transformative corrosion of the plate.
