Giorgio Bonelli's Hortus Romanus (Roman Garden), published in eight volumes between 1772 and 1793, is one of the great illustrated botanicals of the eighteenth century. Fewer than 300 copies are believed to have been printed, and only a few were hand-coloured. The Academy's set of the first seven volumes was purchased from Dr Johnson's friend Francesco Sastres on 19 April 1788.
