Artwork description

How do we relate physically and emotionally to evolving environments? Sara Lee’s own evocative response to the changing light off the north Kent coast invites the viewer to ask this question of themselves. This work was made using the Japanese ukiyo-e style technique. First, watercolour is applied to shina-ply blocks with specialist brushes. Then a contemporary baren (with ball bearings set into a disc) is used to handprint onto Japanese handmade paper. Each image is printed from four blocks and has seven separate layers. Journeying through landscape, and making site-specific responses to that experience, is central to Lee’s practice.
