Artwork description

One of Britain’s most celebrated fashion designers, Zandra Rhodes created a pair of etchings as a result of one of Norman Ackroyd’s legendary studio parties at which friends and contemporaries are invited to make prints under his guidance. Her Veiled Snake Lady etchings are based on the costumes she designed for the attendants to The Queen of the Night in Mozart’s fairy-tale opera The Magic Flute. Their hair represents phases of the moon, while twined around the bodice of each maiden is a snake. In Act 1, it is the veiled maidens who save Prince Tamino from a giant snake.

The Magic Flute was Zandra Rhode’s opera design debut; her fantastical costumes ranged from mythical beasts to Masonic robes. These etchings reveal something of the creative process behind her spectacular costume designs.
