Artwork description

We are proud to present this pencil sketch, which was drawn by Ruskin Spear during the Second World War when he worked as a war artist. It is likely that this drawing was produced in a Serviceman’s Rehabilitation centre at Hammersmith Hospital, West London.

Ruskin Spear was a significant presence at the Royal College of Art, London, during the time he taught there from 1948–1975. Leonard Rosoman and Carel Weight were also tutors at the RCA during much of this period. Vanessa Jackson, David Hockney, Allen Jones, Patrick Caulfield and Olwyn Bowey all studied at the college whilst Spear was a tutor there.

Ruskin Spear was elected to the Royal Academy in 1954 and awarded the CBE in 1979.
