Artwork description

This print is from a series related to Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller‘s ‘English Magic’ exhibition created for the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. Exploring themes such as typically English traditions, cultural history and mythology Deller’s playful imagery often hovers between the real and the imagined.

‘Yacht Identification Guide’ parodies the numerous ‘animal identification’ posters produced to classify and name animals and indicate evolutionary relationships. Instead of birds or apes, Deller ‘taxonomises’ yachts- the sole preserve of the elite and wealthy – presenting the boats as labelled silhouettes. Deller’s distinctive brand of tongue-in-cheek social commentary runs throughout his diverse artistic practice.
