Yinka Shonibare MBE RA studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art and Goldsmiths College. His distinctive use of intensely coloured ‘African’ batik fabric, signifying identity and independence, has been one of the recurring themes throughout his career. He was a Turner Prize nominee in 2004, received wide acclaim for his sculpture Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle for the Fourth Plinth Commission, Trafalgar Square, and has exhibited internationally including at the Venice Biennale. His large-scale work RA Family Album is currently wrapping the façade of the Royal Academy in the lead up to our 250th Anniversary in 2018, bringing the inside outside with a collage of archive images.
