Zhang Enli

Zhang Enli

Painter Zhang Enli depicts contemporary life and gives the same attention to every object, from a stack of cardboard boxes to the branches of a tree.

Artist profile

Zhang Enli was born in China's Jilin province in 1965. He graduated from Wuxi Technical University, Arts and Design Institute in 1989 and is currently living in Shanghai.

As a painter, Zhang gives the same attention to every object, from a stack of cardboard boxes to the branches of a tree, offering a unique depiction of contemporary life. With his installation art, or 'Space Paintings', Zhang tranforms the physical space of a building into one of his containers, playing with the viewer's perception of existence.

During his month-long residency in the RA's historic Life Drawing Room at Burlington House, in partnership with K11 Art Foundation (KAF), Zhang will transform the Academy’s Life Room, where internationally renowned artists and professors have taught and lectured over the past 150 years, into a working studio – or as he describes, ‘a miniature studio’.
