Product story

"Coincidentally, both the Royal Academy Collection works have nautical names – Blue Anchor and Skipper. However, whilst Bert loved the sea, it was not something he would necessarily have thought about in relation to his works. He would produce lists of names – streets, pubs, planets & stars etc – and then choose those he liked. Bert was born in Bermondsey. There is a pub there called The Blue Anchor. Cilla and I have wondered if perhaps it could have been the first pub he became familiar with – the first of many!" - Celia Irvin, daughter of the artist

Albert Irvin was born in 1922 in London where he lived and worked all his life. He studied at Northampton School of Art from 1940 to 1941, before serving as a navigator in the RAF during World War II. After the war, he went on to study at Goldsmiths College where he later returned to teach between 1962 to 1983. He continued to work with incredible energy up until his passing at the age of 92 in March 2015. This energy is captured in his vibrantly-coloured abstract work. The urban location of Irvin's ex-schoolroom studio and the city environment in which he lived and worked fuelled his paintings and prints which are often named after local streets or areas.

Christopher Farr prides itself on using only the very best available yarn, dyes and weavers to produce the finest rugs and textiles. The company actively supports Care & Fair, an organisation based in India dedicated to the elimination of child labour in the rug industry and the education of children in weaving areas.

Please note: Sizes can vary due to the handmade nature of the rugs. If the size needs to be exact, please let us know.
