Always Now

Always Now was conceived by Michael Craig-Martin specifically for the exhibition space at the Kunstverein Hannover and it was realised in Summer 1998. In many respects, the idea within the title harbours the essence of the exhibition.

Product story

The drawing which fills the whole wall of the stairwell forms a prelude, acting both as an announcement and a compendium of all the everyday objects which, painted in bewilderingly changing dimensions, later appear in pairs in each room. Each of the eight rooms is given its unique definition by the colours magenta, yellow, red, green, blue, purple, orange and turquoise. Earlier works have been hung in correspondent arrangements on white wall surfaces within an in situ ensemble of painting and architecture. By rendering the colour transitions visible, the doorways act as articular joints connecting the work's many physical and conceptual dimensions. Architecture and painting, painted and actual everyday objects, past and present, light and shadow are all accorded the status of an immediate temporal and aesthetic presence which draws the viewer into the here and now. This catalogue documents the synthesis of the arts ALWAYS NOW.
