We are delighted to present this screenprint made by Rose Wylie RA specially for the RA Schools.
Derived from a series of coloured pencil drawings made whilst visiting New York, this print references American iconography and highlights Wylie’s perennial passion for working with popular culture, media, and daily observations.
Published in the RA Schools as an edition of 40, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.
During a trip to the USA, Wylie encountered the many facets of contemporary America culture as defined by advertising and pop culture - from billboards promoting cars to the omnipresent global phenomenon that is Mickey Mouse. Using these visual archetypes as a narrative device, Wylie creates a wry, freewheeling artwork, in which she combines her signature spontaneous style with graphic simplicity.
At the time of producing the print, Wylie was experimenting with the diptych format and decided to combine these two images side by side to simultaneously record her visit to New York and to comment on modern American history.
