Sir Christopher Le Brun PPRA: Unenclosed

This new selling show in the Academician’s Room brings together a group of nine paintings by Christopher Le Brun.

'I chose to show this group of paintings together for their luminous or shining quality, for the pleasure and delight of the eye. In the work that gives the display its title, all the pictorial elements are revealed, opened up for clarity so you see through to the deep yellow ground.

Think of the painting as it first appeared to me when making it, as if you are seeing it develop from the back - working out towards you in layers by way of the vertical structures poised in space, with grace-note colours grouped together on the surface.

In a world overwhelmed by messages, Art is our ally. It continues, survives even, as something not yet enclosed - whether painting, poem or song, it is the inner life of our imagination resisting the pressure of the everyday. It is the spirit’s instinct for what is mysterious over what we can explain, and as irreducible to reason (or justification) as we are ourselves.'

On show in the Academicians' Room, Keeper's House from 3 September 2024.
