Artist profile

Born in 1958 in Mortsel, near Antwerp, Luc Tuymans began his studies in the fine arts at the Sint-Lukasinstituut in Brussels in 1976. He continued his studies at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de la Cambre from 1979 to 1980 and at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten from 1980 to 1982, in Brussels and Antwerp respectively.

He has since achieved international recognition primarily as a painter, representing Belguim at the Venice Biennale in 2001. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions at a number of major institutions all over Europe and America, including a retrospective at Tate Modern, London, in 2004. He has also featured in numerous group exhibitions internationally including ‘The Painting of Modern Life’ at the Hayward Gallery, London, in 2007. In 2015, a major survey of Tuymans’s work, 'Intolerance,' was presented at the Qatar Museums Gallery Al Riwaq in Doha. Comprising over one hundred works, this was the artist’s largest presentation to date. Tuymans’ work is held in significant museum collections all over the world. He has had a number of solo exhibitions with David Zwirner since joining the gallery in 1994. A catalogue raisonné of the artist’s work that will illustrate approximately five hundred paintings from 1975 to the present day is currently being prepared by Zwirner. The first volume is set to be published in 2017.

Tuymans is widely admired and recognised as a teacher and curator as well as an artist. He lives and works in Antwerp.
