Mark Hampson, Head of Material Processes in the Royal Academy Schools, combines fantastical subjects with both contemporary and traditional techniques to create his intricate works.

Artist profile

Mark Hampson is a painter and printmaker. Following his studies at Chelsea School of Art and Royal College of Art he has held over 20 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 100 group exhibitions. His work has been seen throughout Europe, Asia and the United States at venues including the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, the William Morris Gallery in London and the Kunst Museum in Vienna.


Hampson’s Almost Real Art solo exhibition was held in the Tennant Gallery from 2012 to 13. Throughout his career, he has received high profile awards including the Bronze medal at the Osaka Triennial, the Krakow print biennale and first prize at the Northern print biennale.


His teaching career has been prolific, serving as senior tutor in printmaking for 14 years at the Royal College of Art then becoming Head of Material Processes in the Royal Academy Schools in 2010. In 2007 he was made a senior fellow of the RCA.


Hampson's work is represented in numerous private and public collections including the V&A Museum, The Arts Council of Great Britain, Hyundai Arts Collection, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, Krakow Museum and the Osaka Prefectural Government collection.
