Product story

Through photography, working drawings, structural diagrams, as well as text by the architecture writer Patrick Sykes, this book explores Shawcross’ process in creating The Dappled Light of the Sun.

The sculptures of Conrad Shawcross explore subjects that lie on the borders of geometry and philosophy, physics and metaphysics. For the 2015 Summer Exhibition’s Annenberg Courtyard installation – The Dappled Light of the Sun – Shawcross created a large-scale, immersive work consisting of five weathered steel, cloud-like forms made from thousands of tetrahedrons that divide and cascade down in scale from the centre out. Shawcross’ choice of the tetrahedron is rooted in his practice of modelling scientific thought and reason into his artwork. The tetrahedron was regarded by the ancient Greek philosophers as the symbol of the atom – the unobtainable but essential unit of all matter that could not be further subdivided.
