Senior Academician Fred Cuming’s work is characterised by his exploration of dramatic light and shadow within the natural landscape, celebrating the sea and sky of the English coastline.

Artist profile

Fred Cuming studied at Sidcup School of Art, and the Royal College of Art, in the 1940s and 1950s. Since 1953, his work has been included in group exhibitions; and, since 1978, in regular solo shows throughout the UK and more recently in the United States. In 2001 he was featured artist in the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, with an entire gallery dedicated to his work.


Cuming’s awards include the Grand Prix Fine Art (1977), the Royal Academy’s House & Garden Award, and the Sir Brinsley Ford Prize (New English Art Club, 1986). Private collections worldwide feature his work.


Cuming was elected Royal Academician in 1974. He is also a member of the New English Art Club, and an associate of the Royal College of Art. He lives and works in East Sussex.
