Mary Gartside (c.1755-1819) was a British flower painter and teacher of watercolour painting. In 1781 she exhibited botanical drawings at the Royal Academy. She was the first woman known to have published a book on colour: An Essay on Light and Shade, on Colours, and on Composition in General (London, 1805). It included a set of freely-painted abstract colour 'blots', illustrating harmonious picture compositions and degrees of brightness in colours.
