J.M.W. Turner and John Constable are considered by many to be the twin giants of British Art. Born wihtin a year of one another, they were destined to break the mould of landscape painting and transform the genre forever. Over time, their rivalry at the Royal Academy's Annual Exhibition became fabled, supposedly coming to a dramatic head on Varnishing Day in 1832. In 2019 the Royal Academy once again displays the two paintings that sparked the incident side by side, permitting us to explore the facts and the myths surrounding the two artists, and to consider what Constable meant when he said that Turner had 'been here and fired a gun'.
