L'anglais au Moulin Rouge (after) Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1970
This vintage lithographic poster of "Englishman at the Moulin Rouge" (1892) was reproduced by Mourlot master printer Henri Deschamps for an exhibition of the Donald Karshan collection at the Indianapolis Museum of Art during its inaugural year. Donald Karshan was a curator, an art critic, Director Emeritus of The New York Cultural Center, founder and past director of the Museum of Graphic Arts and a faculty member of The New School for Social Research.
The original lithograph by Toulouse-Lautrec created in 1892 was itself based on a preparatory drawing on cardboard of the same year.
Each poster comes with a Certificate of Provenance, signed by Eric Mourlot and stamped from the Collection of Atelier Mourlot. The selling price includes the bespoke hand-made frame, featuring cast acrylic glazing with 92% optical clarity and 90% UV protection and responsibly sourced solid ash with hand-applied, painted finish.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) was a French artist, painter, printmaker, caricaturist, illustrator and draughtsman born into aristocracy in Albi, Tarn, the Midi-Pyrénées region of southern France. Although his most common medium was paint on canvas, he was no stranger to lithography. He created 363 posters and prints in his career. Toulouse-Lautrec is held in the highest regard of the post-impressionist movement along with his contemporaries, Cézanne, Van Gogh and Gauguin.
Please note: this work will be available for delivery and collection from 19 March 2024, after the end of the exhibition.
