This etching is by Czech-born Mila Furstova who exhibited a much-celebrated large-scale work in the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition in 2018. Characterised by the yellow paper on which the image is printed, her works have a distinctly surreal presence and a strong sense of the spiritual. In this image, the mother figure has adopted a balanced ‘boat pose’ to cradle her sleeping child as she works. Symbolic flying birds, angular forms, and magical starry nights are recurring motifs in Furstova’s practice. She has collaborated extensively with the British band Coldplay in creating covers for several of their singles and for their Ghost Stories album.
