Summer Exhibition Poster, 1972
John Ward has been characterised as the ‘establishment artist par excellence’ and pursued a highly successful career as a portraitist in the grand tradition. Even so, like many other artists of his generation, Ward’s professional life began with illustration, in his case for Vogue magazine. Something of this early phase can be seen in the relaxed perspective of the Academy’s galleries at exhibition time. Ward has deliberately left space in the composition for the graphics.
