Lawrence Gowing was a writer, artist, curator and teacher, and a senior Academician of the Royal Academy. His passing in February 1991 was marked by a memorial display in the Summer Exhibition, which included The Gate in the Lane (1989), a detail of which appears in this poster. The Academy has periodically produced memorial posters, in limited numbers, ever since.
