Summer Exhibition, 2004 Epic Poster

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy, we've collaborated with Surface View to present an unparalleled collection of our past posters.

Increasingly the organisers of the Summer Exhibition have sought to bring a contemporary curatorial sensibility to the traditional format of an open exhibition. The lead organisers in 2004 were the Academicians Allen Jones and David Hockney, and they chose to highlight drawing. Hockney’s Andalucia Mosque, Cordova was one of six massive watercolours that reigned supreme over Gallery III.

This retrospective collection of Royal Academy posters, created in colllaboration with Surface View, displays a glorious intersection between art and design, and includes classic posters such as the seminal Sensation Exhibition in 1997 designed by Why Not Associates, Anish Kapoor’s ground breaking exhibition of 2009, and Henri Matisse’s artwork featured on the 1975 French Graphic Art exhibition poster.

Each poster is printed on robust Tyvek® paper with a satin finish and is supplied with struts and bulldog clips for fixing. Each print retains the quality, quirks and age-worn beauty of the original image.
