Stephen Farthing RA started to draw trees after reading John Ruskin's Elements of Drawing. Ruskin’s ‘drawing course’ takes students from the relatively simple task of copying the shape of a flat leaf, through the relationship between proportion and growth, to a point where they draw a real tree. Farthing’s own works are driven by a sustained period of looking. There is no theory, just a protocol. Farthing starts with the leaf at the very top of the tree then works down leaf by leaf to the trunk, so the work is ‘grown’ in the opposite direction to nature.

Painter Stephen Farthing studied at St Martin’s School of Art from 1969 to 1973 before completing a Masters Degree in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 1976.
