Yinka Shonibare RA was born in London in 1962, and raised in Nigeria. He is most known for his use of colourful ‘Dutch-wax’ dyed fabrics, commonly found in Western Africa, and Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle which became his first public art commission for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London.

Author Rachel Kent is the Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), Sydney. This volume was published to accompany the 2008 exhibition Yinka Shonibare MBE. The retrospective was curated by Kent for the MCA and it then traveled to the Brooklyn Museum, New York and the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC.
