This limited edition stone lithograph by Anne Desmet RA was first shown in an exhibition of prints to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2018.

Desmet’s strong emotional connection to the Royal Academy is reflected in these works that celebrate the newly renovated 6 Burlington Gardens, which will include new galleries when it re-opens to the public in May 2018. These prints explore the historical architecture of the building, the imposing entrance staircase for example, and the artist’s discovery of newly created spaces, particularly the grand lecture theatre which she describes as being like a coliseum.
All proceeds from sales of this work go directly to support the non-profit-making areas of the Royal Academy, particularly the RA Schools.
Reflecting Desmet’s strong connection to the Royal Academy, New RA in Construction, a stone lithograph made at Hole Editions, Newcastle, celebrates the expanded RA campus via a series of studies of the 6 Burlington Gardens building site. The print reveals the artist’s exploration of the historical architecture of the building, including the entrance staircase, the inner structure of the domed ceiling in the listed British Academy Room and the imposing roof statuary. Also featured is the newly created grand lecture theatre, which in Desmet’s depiction suggests the form of an ancient amphitheatre.
The RA Editions programme generates valuable revenue for the RA and in particular the RA Schools.
