Leonard McComb RA was a multi-faceted artist who explored the detail in nature and saw each of his drawings, paintings and sculptures as a portrait.

Artist profile

Leonard McComb RA was born in Glasgow in 1930. He studied at Manchester School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art, London.

McComb recieved a multitude of awards, including the Royal Academy's Jubille Award (1977), The Times Watercolour Prize (1992 and 1993) and the RWS Prize (1998). He also undertook major commissions such as the Jubille Medal for the Vaitican in celebration of the Millennium.

A versatile artist, he was a draughtsman, painter, sculptor and printmaker whose work examined the detail in nature's forms.

McComb was elected to the Royal Academy in 1991 and acted as Keeper of the Royal Academy from 1995 to 1998. He lived and worked in London until his death in 2018.
